Breast Cancer Awareness is a modern variation of the oldest confidence scam in the book. The world's third largest drug company, Sanofi-Aventis, sponsored a tour to Budapest and Paris for a "parliamentary and stakeholder working group" including representatives from British patient groups. The tour included "optional attendance" at lectures at the European Association of Cancer Research conference in Budapest and a presentation in Paris on cancer drugs used in France but not yet approved in Britain. The head of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, Mike Unger, defended participation in the trip: "If we paid, then it would come out of the charity's fund for research, which would be very wrong." The Fund had not been going very long before we encountered some opposition and pressure from certain figures in the medical profession and from a national leukaemia charity. They wished us to stop our help and support of victims and relatives. Pressure was put on hospital staff to refuse help from us for the victims and relatives but we still managed to help to buy some medical equipment as well as comforts for victims and relatives. This opposition eventually ceased a few years later when we stopped fund raising .
One reason given for the opposition was that we were diverting funds from research into possible cures and should not be concerning ourselves with support for victims and their families, nor with prevention of the conditions, despite knowing the causes in most cases.
Medical charities are controlled by the medical profession and therefore by the drug and chemical industries. It is they that actually cause the vast majority of blood disorders, leukaemia and other cancers. It is perhaps not surprising then that we experienced such opposition from those profiting initially by causing the conditions and then again by selling the treatment. Prevention and the best care and treatment cannot be achieved without informing the public and victims of the causes. This is the very information the drug/ chemical and nuclear industries, medical profession and governments want to keep from the public. Mammography was known to cause cancer but the media and the "health officials" in the government stayed silent! The mammography policy pushed by the American Cancer Society to fill its bank account remained the U.S. government policy for ten more years until a massive Canadian study showed conclusively what was known 20 YEARS before but what was not in the interests of ACS and NCI to admit: X raying the breasts of women younger than age 50 provided no benefit and probably endangered their lives.
